Atari Coin-Op Division Corporate Records, 1969-2002

Atari pioneered the arcade video game and helped launch the video game revolution with the introduction of Pong (1972), the Home Pong console (1975), and the Atari 2600 (1977) during the 1970s. Initially as Atari Inc. (1972–1984) and later as Atari Games (1984–1999), the company produced iconic arcade video games and pinball machines such as Pong, Breakout (1976), Asteroids (1979), Superman pinball (1979), Missile Command (1981), Star Wars (1983), Gauntlet (1985), and Primal Rage (1994). The collection encompasses a wide array of historical materials, including more than 3,000 pieces of original concept and final arcade cabinet artwork, hand-drawn assembly design sketches, storyboards, photographs, and print advertising proofs; hundreds of original art kits and production films for Atari arcade video game cabinets; nearly 2,800 videos of game demos, television commercials, industry show presentations, focus groups, and company celebrations; arcade game source code; promotional materials; and an unreleased Maze Invaders arcade video game—one of only two units known to exist. Also included in the Atari Coin-Op Division Corporate Records collection are dozens of binders chronicling the production of virtually every Atari coin-operated game from 1972 to 1999; extensive corporate records documenting game brainstorming sessions, industry and market research, and player game evaluations; and company correspondence, newsletters, and technical documentation.

The Smithtown Library

About

The Smithtown Library in Smithtown, Long Island, NY, can trace its beginnings to 1907 when materials were housed in Judge Lawrence Smith's law office. Between 1909 and 1912 the collection was moved to a separate small building, and then to the Epenetus Smith Tavern. The first permanent library building opened on August 12, 1912. That building was moved to its present location in 1950. In 1952 the library was chartered as a municipal library, the only one in Suffolk County. An addition was made to the original building in 1953, again in 1967-68, and again in 2011-2012. The Smithtown Library System consists of the Main Building and three branches located in Commack, Kings Park, and Nesconset.

History was made on November 6, 2001, when Smithtown residents cast their ballots in a town-wide referendum, and chose by a large margin to separate from the Town of Smithtown and become an independent Library. History was once again made on April 30, 2002. On that day, The Smithtown Library Special District held its first Budget Vote and Trustee Election. Residents elected a seven member Board of Trustees. This new governing board took office on July 1, 2002. The residents that serve on the Board are all volunteers. Their terms of office are three years in length. The Library Director works closely with the Board of Trustees in governing the Library System which is the largest on Long Island and ranks tenth largest in the State of New York.

The Smithtown Library is a member of the Long Island Library Resources Council.

The Sage Colleges

About

Russell Sage College was founded in Troy, New York, in 1916 by Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage and named in honor of her late husband, who had left her his considerable fortune. With Eliza Kellas, head of the Emma Willard School, Mrs. Sage was active in the women's suffrage movement; in founding the new College, they proposed to offer women the means of independence through the combination of broad education in the liberal arts with preparation for specific professional careers.

During World War II, an "emergency men's division" was created and in 1942 the first graduate degree was conferred. In 1949, an Albany Division was opened, offering two-year, four-year and graduate degrees under the charter of Russell Sage College and extending the College's mission to include the education of men on the second campus. The Sage Junior College of Albany received its own degree-granting powers in 1957. In 1995, the Sage Graduate School became authorized to grant degrees independently, the Sage Evening College became recognized as a separate administrative unit, and the institution was re-chartered by the Board of Regents of the state of New York as The Sage Colleges, often referred to for the sake of convenience as "Sage." The words "Russell Sage College" now refer only to the college for women. In 2001, the Sage Junior College of Albany and Sage Evening College were replaced by a single entity, Sage College of Albany.

The Archives contains the official records of The Sage Colleges, which includes Russell Sage College, Sage College of Albany, and Sage Graduate School. Access is by appointment only.

The Sage Colleges is a member of the Capital District Library Council.

The College of Saint Rose - Neil Hellman Library

About

The College of Saint Rose was founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet as a Roman Catholic college for women. Its founders selected the name of Saint Rose to honor the first canonized saint in the Americas. An evening division was developed in 1946 to meet the needs of World War II veterans and, in 1949, a graduate school was added to provide master's degree programs. Men were admitted to both the original evening and graduate divisions, and in 1969 the College became fully co-educational. In 1970, the Board of Trustees was expanded to include laypersons in addition to the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Thus, The College of Saint Rose became an independent college.

The college ceased academic instruction in June 2024 and began the process of closing the school. The archival material is being transferred to a number of institutions, including the University at Albany and the Carondelet Consolidated Archives in St Louis, Missouri.

Syracuse Polish Home - Polish Heritage Library

About

The Syracuse Polish home was founded in 1919 as a cultural meeting place for Polish immigrants in Syracuse. Original plans called for a YMCA type facility with meeting rooms, bowling alleys, gymnasium, and swimming pool. For over 90 years, The Polish Home has served as a cultural hub for first generation Polish immigrants in Syracuse and subsequently American citizens of Polish decent. It started as a club and a community center, and it still exists as such today.

The neighborhood around The Polish Home has diversified since its days as an enclave of Polish immigrants on Syracuse's near West Side. The Polish Home changed, too, adapting to meet the needs of the evolving greater community while retaining its roots in Polish and Polish-American culture. Today, many ethnic groups, religious organizations and societies utilize the Polish Home. Our neighbors are our guests, eligible to become members of the Syracuse Polish Community, Inc.

Our Polish Home is home to many Polish organizations and others. Presently we boast around 700 individual members and serve to unite the Polish-American community with the more recent Polish immigrants to promote our shared Polish heritage with the greater community. We strive to uphold and promote the culture of our ancestors not only to our future generations, but to American society as a whole.

The Architecture of Livingston County, NY

In the late 1970s, with support from the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, photographer Daniel Fink (1937-1995) undertook a project of creating a photographic record of notable architectural specimens in Livingston County, NY. More than one hundred domestic, commercial, and religious structures were selected, taking into consideration the excellence of and potential threats to each, as well as their age and condition. Some of the styles represented include Gothic and Gothic Revival, Italianate, Federal, Greek Revival, Mansard, beaux arts, eclectic, cobblestone, and stick style. Fink, who was also chair of SUNY Geneseo’s art department, acknowledged that his study is not exhaustive, but rather a significant start in preserving, at least as images, Livingston County’s historically significant architectural specimens.
