Approximately 2.75 million soldiers in total fought in the Civil War. Each of these soldiers had family, loved ones, and friends back home anxiously awaiting their return. Huguenot street has letters detailing the experiences of three Ulster County soldiers during the war, which help to shed light on the individual stories behind the statistics. These soldiers include:
Meeker Griffin, who mustered in Company C of the 56th Regiment of the New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry in 1861 and later transferred to the Navy on December 31, 1863.
Johannes Lefevre, who fought in the 156th New York Volunteer Army. Johannes fought in many battles, including the famous Battle of Winchester. Although he was severally wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek, doctors assured his family that he would recover shortly. Tragically, however, Johannes succumbed to gangrene in a Virginia hospital far from his family back home in New Paltz.
James T. Thitchener, who enlisted on August 16th 1862 and was mustered to position of Private on September 5th 1862 at the age of 25. He is known to have fought in the battle of Chancellorsville, and was maimed in the battle of Gettysburg, on July 2nd 1863, less than one year after enlisting. He survived his injuries, but died relatively young at the age of 36 on August 31st 1872.

The Village of Baldwinsville is located in Onondaga County, New York. The village is named after Dr. Jonas Baldwin, who built a dam across the Seneca River, creating a private canal that kept the water highways prospering and generating energy for the area. Baldwinsville became a flourishing agricultural center during its early settlement and also had small factories around the area. In the early 1900s, Baldwinsville was connected to two larger cities, Oswego and Syracuse, by the Erie Lackawanna Railway. Baldwinsville continues to be a thriving agricultural region today and, along with the Town of Lysander, one of the fastest growing population centers in Onondaga County.
Anthony J. Christopher Sr., a Baldwinsville, New York, native, was a well-known historian for the Town of Van Buren and responsible for pulling together the historical photographs and ephemera that make up the collection. He was a member of the board of directors of the Onondaga Historical Association, a trustee of the Baldwinsville Library and author of “Sketches of Yesterday,” a column appearing weekly in The Baldwinsville Messenger. Christopher was also a founding member and past president of the Beauchamp Historical Club and took an active role in its projects. Anthony and his wife, the former Carrie Eleanor Tucker, maintained a museum in a barn behind their home, collecting and preserving memorabilia of the Baldwinsville area. The Christophers were awarded a special citation by the Greater Baldwinsville Chamber of Commerce for “devotion and dedication to the cultivation, enhancement and preservation of Baldwinsville’s heritage.” Christopher died in 1975.
Scope of Collection
The Christopher Collection includes images representing a historical snapshot of the people and places around the towns of Van Buren and Lysander, and the Village of Baldwinsville, New York. Spanning the 19th Century through the 1970s, the images depict the village doctors who charged one dollar per house call; trolleys that moved people from B’ville to Syracuse to Fulton; horsedrawn tobacco wagons; peony and aster farms; the Baldwin Canal; historical buildings, boats, industries and mills on the Seneca River, and much more.
Additional Information
Mary Crego scanned the slides and created a draft for the index; Bonnie Kisselstein identified locations and people depicted in the photographs; Sue McManus contributed to identification and local history details; Diane Holbert created the descriptive metadata; Chad Harper extracted and normalized the metadata; Ryan Perry assisted with the upload to NY Heritage.

The village of Chittenango is located in Madison County, New York. The village started to grow because of the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825 and connected multiple cities in New York State to increased trade and travel. Since the Erie Canal passed through the area to north of the village, the Chittenango Canal Company built a spur that connected to the Erie Canal proper. This resulted in the creation of the Chittenango Canal Boat Landing, which helped to make the village a waypoint along the canal. The village of Chittenango was officially established in 1842, during a period of growing industries for travelers and traders alike. Doran Dry Dock, located in the neighboring town of Durhamville, was the site of canal boat construction and repair. Durhamville also featured a canal lock and aqueduct crossing over Oneida Creek, until the canal was rerouted to bypass Durhamville, Chittenango, and other villages in the area.
Scope of Collection
The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum Digital Photographic Collection is a small portion of the entire photographic collection, owned by the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. The collection represents a historical overview of Chittenango Landing and the surrounding areas that had significant importance to the canal boat industry in the middle section of the Erie Canal. Among some of the most valuable photographs are images of boats, dry docks and boatyards, workmen, views of Chittenango Pottery and Cannery. Some of the original images in this collection were used to recreate the Chittenango dry dock complex.
