Historical Context

Stephen Alcorn is an illustrator/author, printmaker, and portraitist. Although born in the United States, Mr. Alcorn spent his formative years in Florence, Italy. He attended the Istituto Statale d’Arte. Mr. Alcorn has illustrated over 50 books, including "Abraham Lincoln: In His Own Words" (1993) and "Frederick Douglass: In His Own Words" (1995). 

Stephen Alcorn lived and worked in the village of Cambridge, New York from 1986-2017 with his wife, botanical artist Sabina Fascione Alcorn. They opened The Alcorn Studio & Gallery in Cambridge in 1993. In 2017, they moved the gallery to the Richmond, Virginia area where Stephen is a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University/School of the Arts.

Relief printing is a printing method in which a printing block with ink applied to its non-recessed surface is brought into contact with paper.

Frederick Douglass (c. February 14, 1818 – February 20, 1895) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He became the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th president of the United States, serving from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. He led the United States through the American Civil War, defending the nation as a constitutional union, playing a major role in the abolition of slavery, expanding the power of the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy.

Scope of Collection

This collection contains original relief-block prints created by artist Stephen Alcorn for the award-winning books Abraham Lincoln: In His Own Words (1993) and Frederick Douglass: In His Own Words (1995).
