Historical Context

Colton was established by an act of the legislature on April 12, 1843, and became the 27th town of St. Lawrence County on February 1, 1844. The hamlet was originally named "Matildaville" and the town "Springfield," but was later changed to Colton at the request of one of the town's pioneers, Jesse Colton Higley, honoring his mother's family name. It is located along the banks of the Raquette River.

Scope of Collection

This collection consists of photographs and postcards for the town of Colton and the surrounding area, ranging in age from 1844 to 1996. Subjects include municipal buildings, churches, schools, inns and hotels, logging operations, hydroelectric dams, homes, libraries, and the Raquette River and carry falls. There are also many photographs of local residents from throughout this time period, including numerous group photographs of the classes at Union Free School. Additionally, there are many images of the construction of the Carry Falls Dam.

Historical Context

The town of Colonie is located in the Albany County, New York area and is the most populous suburb of Albany. There are a number of United States National Register of Historic Places located in Colonie, including multiple cemeteries.

Scope of Collection

The collection itself is composed of documents and photographs created by the late R. Arthur Johnson throughout the 1970s. The smaller Colonie-area cemeteries are shown here. These cemeteries are usually centered around one or a small group of families on land originally owned by them. The general timeframe of the burials in these cemeteries ranges from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. Some of the earlier graves were for individuals involved in or touched by the Revolutionary War.

Historical Context

Colonel Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth (April 11, 1837 – May 24, 1861) grew up in Mechanicville, New York, and was a law clerk and United States Army soldier, best known as the first conspicuous casualty of the American Civil War. The American Civil War took place in the 1860s and is known as the bloodiest war for the United States, with at least 600,000 soldier casualties.

Historical Context

The SUNY Upstate College of Medicine is one of the oldest medical schools in New York. Its name has changed a few times over the years as follows:
College of Medicine, Syracuse University - 1875-1887
Syracuse University College of Medicine - 1887-1950
State University of New York (SUNY) College of Medicine at Syracuse – 1950 - 1953
SUNY Upstate Medical Center – 1953 – 1986

The College of Medicine continues to grow and expand. SUNY Upstate graduates practice medicine at many prestigious universities and hospitals.

Scope of Collection

The collection contains class photographs which span decades of medical school development. There are pictures representing classes starting in 1885 and ending in 1964.

In addition to class photographs, there are images depicting graduations and commencements. Almost all of the pictures have identifying names for each person. However, the names are not as yet searchable. There are gaps in the collection as a consequence of the country’s and the medical school involvement in both World Wars. For example, there are no class pictures available between 1914-1917 during World War I nor between 1939-1945 during World War II.

Historical Context

The Central New York Library Resources Council, familiarly known as CLRC, was formed in 1967 as one of nine Reference and Research Library Resources councils (“3Rs”) in New York State. These nine Councils are currently known as the Empire State Library Network (ESLN). CLRC serves libraries and library systems in four Central New York counties: Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, and Onondaga. CLRC’s office is located in the city of Syracuse.

Scope of Collection

The CLRC Archives Collection includes images of member libraries and librarians. The images come from a 1975 slide presentation about the council, formerly known as CENTRO, and its functions.

Historical Context

The Tahawus Cloudsplitter was a periodical magazine that recorded life in the village and mines of Tahawus, New York. It was “published by the MacIntyre Development of the Titanium Division, National Lead Company, Tahawus, New York in the interest of the employees and their families”. Space was allocated in every issue for each department at the mine, church news, the YMCA, sports, the Women’s Club, library, fire department, as well as other events, such as free French and English classes and the formation of the Tahawus Flying Club.

This collection contains several issues of the Tahawus Cloudsplitter, dating between 1943 and 1971.

Historical Context

The Clinton Liberal Institute opened in 1891. The Clinton Liberal Institute, or the C.L.I., was a coeducational preparatory school. Later it was changed to a military school. Students from all over the world came to the C.L.I. Simon Lake, one of the students, invented the first modern submarine. The C. L. I. Armory was used to store artillery equipment. It burned on March 25, 1900.

This collection contains images and artifacts relating to the coeducational, military preparatory school that existed in the village at the latter half of the nineteenth century.
