Maxwell Memorial Library
About
Maxwell Memorial Library traces its beginnings to the efforts of K. Belle Hackford, a Camillus schoolteacher, to establish a library in the village of Camillus. Following a call for book donations and a discussion at a public meeting, the Camillus Library Association was formed on May 26, 1918. Miss Hackford was the first librarian. She was joined by Mary Ellis Maxwell as her assistant on June 12, 1919. On May 24, 1920, Mrs. Maxwell became the librarian upon Miss Hackford’s retirement. The library was granted a provisional charter by the Regents of the State University of New York on September 22, 1921. The absolute charter was issued on February 19, 1926.
The Camillus Library moved from one temporary home on Main Street in the village to another several times in its first decade. Its first location was in a single room over Abert’s Plumbing Shop. In January 1922, the library moved downstairs in the same building to an empty storefront. Two years later, in September 1924, the library moved to the old Cook home (future site of the village pharmacy). In December 1925, there was yet another move to an old building behind the Kemper Garage. The library’s current home is in the former Second Presbyterian Church at the intersection of Genesee and Leroy streets in the village of Camillus.
The Second Presbyterian Church was the first church in the area, built in 1822 on land donated by David Munro. The original wood frame structure was replaced by a brick building in 1868. It served as an active church until 1916. After closing as a church, the building was used by the American Red Cross during World War I. The Camillus Library Association purchased the building in 1925 for $3000. Remodeled at a cost of $15,000, the former church became the new library in 1927. It has since undergone several additional renovations, the most recent in 2016-2017.
On February 28, 1958, the Camillus Library was renamed the Maxwell Memorial Library in honor of Mary Ellis Maxwell and her decades of service to the library and community.

Massapequa Public Library
About
In February 1952, two petitions were received by the Massapequa Board of Education asking for the creation of a school district public library in Massapequa. By May of 1952 a budget of $10,000 was approved, the first library Board of Trustees was appointed, and the Massapequa Public Library was born!
The board appointed the library director, and other staff members were hired. It was now time to set about the hard task of creating a new library from scratch . . .
On January 18th, 1953, the Massapequa Public Library opened its doors for the first time. It was a small rented storefront library located on 526 Broadway, Massapequa, at what is the current site of Bravo Pizzeria.
Katharine Smith generously donated land upon which to build a new library building. By September 25th, 1955, Groundbreaking Ceremonies were held for the Massapequa Public Library at 523 Central Avenue. The Central Avenue building of the library opened on September 12th, 1956.
The library book trailer was put into service on January 16th, 1961. It was decommissioned on July 31st, 2009.
The library received a generous donation of land from the Bar Harbour Shopping Centre, Inc., in 1959. The Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Bar Harbour Library Building was held in April of 1964, and dedication ceremonies were held on June 13th, 1965.
As time went, there was a call to make renovations at both library buildings. Renovations for the Bar Harbour Library were completed in 1999, and renovations for Central Avenue were completed in 2001.

Maria College
About
In 1958, the Religious Sisters of Mercy founded Maria as a Sister Formation and Liberal Arts college with a student body of 52. Today, we serve just over 1,000 students, men and women, who attend our day, evening and weekend classes, and are enrolled in our online course offerings. From its founding, the mission of the College has been to educate for service—service to the greater Capital Region and to the communities in which its graduates live and work. Although Maria was established to educate the Sisters of Mercy, the vision soon broadened with the College’s first degree program with enrollment open to the community : Early Childhood Education. All degree programs were opened to coeducational enrollment in 1971, and today male enrollment accounts for more than 20% of Maria’s student body. The library has a special collection of historical titles aimed at supporting research, learning and teaching by collecting, cataloging and preserving unique titles of interest to Maria College, The Sisters of Mercy and the broader academic community. These fiction and non-fiction titles are classified as “Special Collection” because of their research potential, uniqueness, rarity, early printing, limited availability, autographed editions and/or physical fragility. Items vary considerably, with a concentration on, but not limited to, early American history, children’s literature and Catholicism, with the oldest title dating back to 1686. Also included are black and white photographs, documents, correspondence, publications and newspaper articles pertaining to the history of the College. The digital collection contains a selection of these archival materials depicting Maria’s early days, including the groundbreaking ceremony and blessing of the College, as well as historical photographs of faculty, students, board members, presidents, and local religious community leaders and politicians.

Longwood Public Library
About
The Longwood Public Library began in a one room building that was formerly the Coram School. Mrs. Evelyn Holschuh Brown is credited as the library founder. A provisional charter to establish library services was granted in June 1953. Originally called the "Coram Public Library", the library opened its doors in the little school house on November 24, 1953. During the first year the library struggled to operate with a volunteer staff and a budget $1,000. Although the Library was open for only 8 hours per week and contained only 250 donated books, annual circulation exceeded 1,000 items. By 1958 the library's area of service was expanded to 54 square miles including the communities of Middle Island, Ridge, Yaphank, Lake Panamoka, Coram, Gordon Heights, North Medford and North Shirley.
In order to have a much better location, the library rented space in the former Billy Blake Shopping Center on Middle Country Road in Middle Island (now WalMart) and opened its new 3,800 square foot facility at the northeast corner of the store on December 2, 1971. An architect was retained to design and supervise the renovation of the larger adjacent quarters. Renovations were completed by 1978 and library operations continued without interruption during this move.
Working with an architect to meet both current and future building needs, on April 16, 1986, the Board of Trustees finalized its plan to purchase land and construct a new library at the southwest corner of Middle Country Road and Old Yaphank Road in Middle Island. This proposal was overwhelmingly approved by a community vote of 1360 to 200. On July 1, 1987 the library's name was changed to Longwood Public Library to reflect its role serving the entire school district population. On November 3, 1988 the first permanent library structure in the community's history was opened to the public.
