Introduction: Lift Every Voice

Body

From Martin Luther King, Jr. to President Obama, the mid-1960s to the present were a time of change for Black America. Black Genevans have gone to college and achieved advanced degrees, often leaving the city for better opportunities. However, both in the nation and Geneva, progress has been slow for many. Poverty and high school diplomas are still challenges.

Lift Every Voice: Geneva’s Black Community Since 1966 examines how work, education, worship, and civil rights have changed over the last six decades. This is a continuing story; contact us if you would like to share yours.

“There’s nobody that had to tap our children and say ‘hey, you’re black,’ because we let them know they were…told them the truth.” – Dorothy Eldridge, 1990
