Historical Context

William Henderson Baird (1831-1864) was an officer in the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He served as a Union Colonel and later as Commander of the 126th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action during the 1864 Battle of Petersburg, Virginia.His brother David Wray Baird (1824-1896) was a noted merchant in Geneva, New York.

Scope of Collection

The collection includes Baird’s military papers, as well as family papers with genealogical information. There are also papers relating to Baird’s brother and his business.
