Historical Context

Alcoa was founded by Charles Martin Hall, the discoverer of the aluminum reduction process (electrolysis), in Pittsburgh, PA in 1988.

Alcoa began operations in Massena, NY in 1903. Massena had a large supply of hydroelectric power necessary for smelting aluminum.

Alcoa Massena Operations is the longest continuously operating aluminum smelter in the world.
