Historical Context

Wells College was established in 1868 by Henry Wells. The first yearbooks were published in 1896, named The Cardinal.  The earliest yearbooks included information about student groups, student societies, and events, as well as art pieces and stories.  There were illustrations but few photographs.

Into the 20th century, yearbooks featured more photographs, including individual portraits of the graduating class.
