Historical Context

The mid-20th century was a glamorous time for the wealthy and influential people who made Southampton their summer headquarters. Their days were spent at their elite clubs--on the beach, on the golf course, on the tennis courts or on their horses competing for ribbons at the Southampton Riding and Hunt Club. Their evenings were spent at formal dances or gatherings on their magnificent estates.

Scope of Collection

Society photographer Bert Morgan (1904-1986) focused on members of the Southampton summer colony who were prominent in fashion, arts, entertainment and sports. He found his subjects at the beach, at their clubs and wherever they celebrated.  The date range for these images is 1930-1960.
