Historical Context

The scrapbooks contain clippings from local Penn Yan, NY newspapers, drawings by artist Oliver Sheppard and playbills from local theaters from the years 1900 thru 1950. The contributors were George and Oliver Sheppard. George S. Sheppard (1855-1945) was a prominent attorney in Penn Yan for more than 60 years. George’s son, Oliver Sheppard (1881-1971), worked in George’s law firm and was a commercial artist. A paragraph from a newspaper article published shortly before his death on his ninetieth birthday reads, “His collection of scrapbooks of historical data are famous throughout the state, and he is considered an authority on Yates county historical facts, having a remarkably clear and accurate memory of events over three-quarters of a century.”
