Historical Context

Members of the Kaminski family have resided in the Mohawk Valley since the early twentieth century.  Born in 1893, Walter Kaminski emigrated to Herkimer, New York, in 1910; his wife, Helen Rolska, arrived in 1912. They were married in 1914. They had three children: Theodore (Teddy), Joseph (Kelly), and Judy. The family lived at 324 Pleasant Avenue in Herkimer. Walter worked for Standard Furniture Company in Herkimer. All three children were educated in Herkimer schools. Teddy served in the US Navy during World War II as a ship’s cook on the U.S.S. Lenawee. After returning home, he married June St. Germaine on September 29, 1961. His brother, Joseph, was married twice and served for many years as the principal of Foley School in Herkimer. He later went on to serve as the superintendent of Herkimer Schools. Judy Kaminski married John Szure and worked for many years as the information receptionist at the Rome Development Center’s Control Point (RADC).
