Historical Context

Springport is a town in Cayuga County, New York, that includes the village of Union Springs as well as hamlets like Cayuga Junction, Oakwood, and Powers Corner.  Springport borders the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake.

Gwau-gwah, once a principal village for the Cayuga nation, is within modern Springport boundaries. It was destroyed during the Sullivan Campaign of 1779.

Springport had initially been excluded from the military tracts of post-American Revolution New York, and the town was reserved for the Cayugas.  However, by 1799, most of the Cayuga, including a few Tuscarora, had sold out and departed the area.
