Historical Context

The Howland family of Sherwood, N.Y. included notable suffragists Emily Howland (1827-1929) and Isabel Howland (1859-1942). The family were active in the Sherwood Political Equality Club and other suffrage associations both locally and nationally.

The collection contains materials related to woman suffrage, including documents about local suffrage meetings and attendees, national and international woman suffrage publications, and a large collection of suffrage posters. The collection also contains anti-suffrage materials, published by groups against the extension of suffrage to women.
