Historical Context

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center was founded in 1898 by Dr. Roswell Park, an eminent surgeon and Edward H. Butler, the owner of the Buffalo Evening News. The center has operated under the following names:

• The Pathological Laboratory of the University of Buffalo (1898)

• The Gratwick Research Laboratory (1900)

• The State Institute for the Study of Malignant Disease (1912)

• Roswell Park Memorial Institute (1946)

• Roswell Park Cancer Institute (1992)

• Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (2018-present)

Scope of Collection

The Dr. Edwin A. Mirand artifacts include Dr. Roswell Park’s original death mask, medical instruments used by Dr. Park and his contemporaries, objects from campus events, and other artifacts. The artifacts were collected by Dr. Edwin A. Mirand during his career with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center
