The Dodge family of Port Washington, New York was descended from Tristram Dodge, who first sailed to America from England in 1648. Tristram’s grandsons Thomas, Tristram, and their cousins, Jeremiah and Samuel, settled in Cow Neck (present day Port Washington) in 1718. Thomas Dodge’s homestead was settled in 1721 at the head of an inlet with direct access to Manhasset Bay, which would later become the Mill Pond when dammed to power the Cornwall family’s grist mill in 1790. Seven generations of Dodges lived at this property. The house, which today is operated as a historic house museum by the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society, still stands at 58 Harbor Road in Port Washington and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
