John "Jay" Shaffer Phipps, heir to the Phipps family fortune, was a lover of photography. Throughout his life he photographed countless images of Westbury House that capture his family and his pets. It can generally be assumed that he photographed most of the images found in this collection.
Scope of Collection
This collection consists of images from inside and around the grounds of Westbury House before it became known as Old Westbury Gardens in 1959. The images come from a variety of photographic sources that include Kodachrome slides, 35mm negatives, paper contact strips, and photographs. The images in this collection were taken between 1904-1959.
The collection consists of images recently digitized through Old Westbury Gardens’ partnership with LILRC’s Accessing Archives Program in 2023.
