Historical Context

Walter V. Miller Collection - Walter Virgil Miller (Oct. 14, 1903 - July 3, 1980) was the longtime Town of Germantown Historian and Columbia County Historian. He worked at the Germantown Post Office, was a commercial photographer, and a prolific writer of newspaper columns regarding local history. Having never had an official office to work out of, he accumulated a substantial volume of photographs, documents, and memorabilia pertaining to Columbia County history at his home. Upon his death, there was a heated controversy about what belonged to the Town of Germantown, what belonged to Columbia County, and what belonged to his widow, Margaret. What was deemed to belong to Margaret Miller was auctioned off - a tremendous loss of our shared historical resources in Columbia County.

Scope of Collection

This collection includes all that was deemed to belong to the Town of Germantown, including several boxes of photo negatives, essays and speeches that he prepared, his charcoal drawings, his fictional writing, and a large proportion of the newspaper columns he wrote.
