Historical Context

This collection of letters from 1806 to 1910 detail North Country life from the perspective of Jefferson County residents.

Scope of Collection

There are really two sets of letters here spanning the years from 1806 to 1910. The earlier ones were sent to Betsy Stiles Horr (1782-1867), who lived with her husband Elijah in the hamlet of Stone Mills in northern New York State in the house they built that is still there. Then there is a later set of letters written to Betsey Gould Knox Bonney (1816-1890) who lived in Brownville, New York, with her husband George Bonney. George and Betsey Bonney had four children, two of whom survived childhood: Madison Bonney, who married Ella Horr, and Emma Bonney who married Oscar Wilson and eventually took over the Bonney farm on Bonney Road in the Town of Brownville. These letters were passed down to Florence Bonney Foster (granddaughter of both Betsy and Betsey), who went through them and made some notes on the envelopes. We knew our great-aunt Florence so that brings these letters closer to us. Upon her death, the letters landed at the house of Warren Bonney, Florence’s nephew. Warren’s wife, Margaret, made a first attempt to transcribe some of them. Finally, the box of letters was passed on to their daughters, Ann and Claire Bonney.  The originals are housed at the Library of Congress as the "Stiles, Horr, and Bonney Families Papers" (https://lccn.loc.gov/mm2023086599).
