Historical Context

Most of the records in this collection are plot records showing the location of burial plots in the Mount Hope Cemetery. Mount Hope is American's first municipal, Victorian cemetery, dedicated in 1838 in Rochester, NY. The cemetery covers 196 acres of hills and valleys created by retreating glaciers, and is the final resting place of some notable figures in American History, including Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony.

Scope of Collection

This collection contains Mount Hope Cemetery plot records showing the locations of burials within the cemetery. Each folder contains a cemetery map and the applicable Section or Range map with guide information showing headstones located at outside borders. Maps and accessibility courtesy of Mount Hope Cemetery. Use of interment indexes to locate the burial location is recommended to use these records fully. They are available at the University of Rochester web site. There is also a way to search burials from 1838-1906 on the RGS web site.
