The Mohawk Association of Scientists and Engineers (MASE) formed in 1947 as the Capital District chapter of the Federation of American Scientists to explore and promote the role of scientists and engineers in society. Their objectives included promoting the responsible use of nuclear power, supporting scientists and engineers that were accused of communist sympathy by the House Un-American Committee and Joseph McCarthy's committee, and providing technical assistance to developing countries.
Scope of Collection
The records include the MASE monthly newsletters, organizational documents, correspondence with potential speakers, and correspondence with government representatives advocating for positions supported by MASE. The files also include newsletters and correspondence from the Federation of American Scientists. The collection also documents the organization of Volunteers for International Technical Assistance (VITA), an international technical organization founded from a MASE subcommittee in Schenectady in 1960.
