Historical Context

Isabel Howland (1859-1942) was a woman’s rights activist who worked closely with her longtime colleague Harriet May Mills, Elizabeth Smith Miller, Eliza Wright Osborne, Carrie Chapman Catt and others as she served in the New York State Woman Suffrage Association.

Her grandfather, Slocum Howland, built a store in Sherwood, NY, now known as Aurora, NY, that was a stop in the Underground Railroad. That store is now the Howland Stone Store Museum.
