Historical Context

Futurismo Latino debuted in the Fall of 2023 at La Casita and featured artists Cayetano Valenzuela and Zeke Peña, both Chicano artists who express Chicano futurism and Latino futurism concepts in their art, envisioning BIPOC futures.

Cayetano Valenzuela is a Syracuse-based artist and storyteller whose lettering, illustration and animations evoke wonder, magic and fable.  He owns and operates the Black Rabbit Studio and was a teaching artist in La Casita's summer 2023 youth program, where children produced artwork that reflects on the intersection of Latino culture, technology and imagination, instilling creativity, resilience and empowerment in our youth.

Zeke Peña is a Xicano storyteller and cartoonist from El Paso, TX.  He makes comics and visual narratives that reclaim stories and remix history.  His work uses a mash-up of political cartoons, border rasquache and Hip-Hop culture to address universal themes of identity, politics, ecology and social justice.  He uses a mezcla of new media, traditional techniques and the accessible medium of comics to engage complex issues with satire and comedy.

Scope of Collection

This collection contains artwork from Zeke Peña and Cayetano Valenzuela as well as an interview with Valenzuela, an exhibition catalog and poster, and materials from the children's programming led by Valenzuela.
