Historical Context

HistoryForge, a project of the History Center in Tompkins County, combines historic maps and photos with census records to create a rich, interactive community map.

Volunteers transcribe the entirety of United State Census records, including fields like Occupation and Veteran status, which have been omitted from other census transcription projects.  The resulting datasets are freely available for download from each distinct HistoryForge installation.

HistoryForge has been supported with a Public Engagement with Historical Records grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives (NARA).  The grant allowed The History Center in Tompkins County to make major improvements to this open-source project, including expansion into communities including Auburn, New York, Elmira, New York, and Oberlin, Ohio.

Scope of Collection

Datasets are downloaded as a text file (.csv, or comma separated values) per Census decade.  The datasets may not yet be complete for the community.  The datasets here will be updated in June and December of each year to reflect additions made by HistoryForge transcription volunteers.
