Barns of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains: An Introduction

This collection of photographs and images, curated by Ted Hilscher, Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia-Greene Community College, is presented here as a slide show. The image captions provide a layering of information when viewed sequentially. Together they serve as a brief introduction to identifying and understanding barns and associated outbuildings. We begin by noting the cultural origins of our surviving vernacular barns. We will then look at specific features and how the different areas of the barn was used. Finally, we will look at other outbuildings typically found on the family farm.
