Albert A. Liederman was born on September 26, 1911 in Rochester, N.Y. and he died on December 2, 1992 in Merrick, N.Y. He received an education at East High School in Rochester and attended the Rochester Institute of Technology for art. Additionally, he took classes at the Art Students League in New York City. As an editorial cartoonist, Liederman worked at the Akron Beacon-Journal, the New York Post, the Syracuse Evening Journal, the Journal-American, the Long Island Press, and the Merrick Life. In the 1950s and 60s, Liederman had a syndicated comic strip called the Li’l Leaguer.
In 1964, Liederman received the American Newspaper Guild’s First Page Award. He was a member of several organizations including the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists, the National Cartoonists Society, and the Cartoonists Association.
Scope of Collection
The collection is composed of more than 100 original 8.5” x 11” pencil and ink drawings created by editorial cartoonist, Al Liederman for the Merrick Life newspaper from 1981 to 1989. The content depicts various topics including crime, censorship, taxation, world politics, veterans, and education. The Merrick Library received the collection in 2014 as part of a larger donation from the now-defunct local newspaper Merrick Life.
