Historical Context

The Daughters of the American Revolution, known as D.A.R. or simply DAR, is a membership organization for women who have evidence of direct lineage from a Revolutionary War Patriot soldier.

The DAR was first founded in 1890, and chapters were formed around the country.  The Sa-go-ye-wat-ha chapter formed in 1898, as documented in the newspaper clippings compiled by village historian Roberta Halden for this scrapbook.   The club was named for Sagoyewatha, Red Jacket, orator and Chief of the Wolf Tribe of the Senecas.
