Large mining enterprises created large, often diversely populated settlements of workers to operate their mines, and many Adirondack settlements began life as these sorts of company towns.
Scope of Collection
This collection contains several mining related artifacts, mineral samples, and photographs of mining operations in Essex County, dating between 1874 and 1950. The photographs primarily concern the operations of the National Lead Company and Republic Steel. The artifacts include miner’s headlamps and a pipe.
