Historical Context

The Town of Smyrna is located on the northern border of Chenango County in Central NY. It is primarily a rural, farming community. The Town was founded in 1808 and originally named Stafford. Within a month, it was changed to Smyrna, based on a coastal city in ancient Greece. The Town of Smyrna also includes a village incorporated in 1828. Mary Fargo was Town Historian for Smyrna, NY for many years.
