Historical Context

The Jordanville Public Library was inaugurated on August 26, 1908.  It was built by Corrine Roosevelt Robinson, her husband Douglas Robinson, Jr., and his sister, Mrs. Harriet Whitmore, in honor of their parents, Douglas Robinson, Sr., and Fanny Monroe Robinson.  A dedication ceremony was held on that day, attended by several notable figures.  Corrine Roosevelt Robinson, who was the sister of President Theodore Roosevelt, invited her brother, the President, along with his wife Edith, daughter Ethel, and son Kermit.  Also in attendance were Secretary of State Elihu Root and his wife Clara, Vice-Presidential candidate Hon. James S. Sherman and his wife Carrie, Supreme Court Justice Irving Devendorf, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.  President Roosevelt delivered a speech to the gathered crowd that lasted over an hour.
