Historical Context

Elma Hetherington Mitchell (1915-2004) was a historian and a schoolteacher for decades. She taught at East Meredith, Smyrna, Cobleskill, Otego, Schenevus and Sidney Center schools, besides teaching homebound students and serving in the Unatego district as a reading teacher before retirement. 

She was Town and Village historian for Otego and author of "The History of East Meredith" (three volumes).

Elma was a musician and piano teacher, besides being an active volunteer in local churches, the DAR, the library, and civic club. She was the First Woman Citizen of the Year for the Otego Susquehanna Grange.
