Historical Context

Since its charter in 1901, the Kirkland Town Library has offered various services beyond books including programming, community outreach, and preserving local history.  This information was communicated and documented with photographs taken by staff and volunteers, flyers, and posters made in-house at the Library and in local newspapers.  These clippings, compiled in a collection of scrapbooks, provide a snapshot of the Library's history, as well as local happenings in the community.

Scope of Collection

These hand-compiled scrapbooks document the history of Kirkland Town Library and the greater community from the late 1900s through 2019.  The books contain a wide variety of materials, including newspaper clippings, approximately documents, and photographs.  Many of the items show how the Library responded to the changing world; for example, there are several newspaper clippings and photographs documenting the arrival of the internet to town.  Other items document how people spent their leisure time: the books they read, movies they watched, and programs they attended.  The scrapbooks provide a peek into the day-to-day life of our community, showing people of all ages at work and at play.
