Historical Context

There were, in Claverack Hamlet’s history, four features that made community life very different from that of today. The hamlet was, at various times, the county seat, a station stop on a railroad, a college town, and at the center of numerous dairy farms. Tenure as county seat was brief; the other features were of much greater duration. Well into the third quarter of the twentieth century there were two dairy farms on Stone Mill Road, three on the west side of the hamlet, and five to the north and east of the hamlet.

Scope of Collection

This slideshow consists of images, mostly historic and a few current of notable historic sites, in and near Claverack Hamlet. Many of the buildings are still extant. This collection is curated and text provided by Ted Hilscher, Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia Greene Community College.
