About
The Palmyra Community Library, 402 E. Main Street, Palmyra, NY has been serving the Palmyra community for well over a century, first as a reading room and then chartered in 1906. Since the early part of the 20th century, the library has been a repository for local history items, maps, scrapbooks, genealogical files, photographs, newspapers, indexes, local and regional history books and other holdings of a local and regional interest. The library has a local history room dedicated to these holdings.
Palmyra Community Library is a member of the Rochester Regional Library Council.
Collections
The Family Photo Collection contains photographs (bulk) of people, schools and students, groups, organizations and some area photographs such as the Erie Canal and street views, and some newspaper clippings.
Frederick Winter Griffith
December 17, 1858 - July 28, 1928.
The Frederick Griffith Papers contains assorted business papers (bulk) and some family papers from Frederick Winter Griffith, a resident of Palmyra, N.Y. Mr. Griffith was a businessman and politician, living most of his life in Palmyra.
While Griffith served his community and the greater area in local government positions for many years, he also served as New York State Senator from 1910-1912.
Griffith had a long relationship with the Garlock Packing Company of Palmyra. This relationship started early on with O.J. Garlock, with Griffith eventually serving as president, treasurer and director of the company, positions still held at his death at age 70. Additionally, Griffith owned the Palmyra Printing Company.
He served on the school board, was a Mason and an active member of the Western Presbyterian Church in Palmyra.
He was president of the Palmyra Base Ball Club from about 1897-1902. Correspondence relating to the Palmyra Base Ball Club make up the Frederick W. Griffith Baseball Papers.
