Albion W. Tourgee (1838 - 1905) was a Civil War veteran, politician, and lawyer. He played a pivotal role in the Plessy v. Ferguson case and was a pioneering civil rights activist. This collection includes his correspondence, as well as legal documents, articles, and photographs.
Personal friend and secretary to NYS Governor Grover Cleveland. After Cleveland was elected President of the United States, Lamont was appointed his Secretary of War and close confidant.
This collection consists of letters and marginalia of Samuel Clemens, artifacts associated with him and photos having to do with Clemens' time in Elmira and the family and friends that comprised his circle.
